How to Paint Cork Coasters: DIY Video Tutorial With 4 Easy Steps
Your own set of gorgeous, hand-painted coasters for under $5? Cheers to that!
This article was originally published on a WordPress blog that I’ve retired in favor of Substack. Thanks for reading!
In this tutorial – my first ever YouTube video tutorial! – you’ll learn how to paint cork coasters in a colorblock design using masking tape, acrylic paints, and metallic nail polish.
This tutorial was so much fun to make, and it’s an absurdly easy project that’s impossible to get wrong. It’s the kind of high-impact DIY project you can finish in just one sitting.
These cute coasters would make a perfect housewarming gift or party decoration. With the metallic accent, they’ll instantly glam up a coffee table and are festive enough for a cocktail party.
And they’re incredibly inexpensive to make. I purchased a set of 20 coasters for $11 on Amazon, meaning each one only cost $0.55. Even if you made a set of 8, that’s just $4.40 for the set. I used acrylic paints I already had in my crafting stash, and since I didn’t have a metallic paint I repurposed a gold metallic nail polish.

What you'll need
Cork coasters
Scissors
Masking tape
Paint brushes
Paint palette
Acrylic paints – I used Martha Stewart Crafts’ Pink Taffeta (pearl finish) and Wedding Cake (satin finish) with a tube of Windsor Blue
Metallic nail polish
How to paint cork coasters in 4 easy steps
Step 1
Apply thick and thin strips of masking tape to the cork coasters.
Step 2
Paint the cork using 3 colors of acrylic paint and 1 metallic nail polish.
Step 3
Apply a second coat and allow the paint to dry.
Step 4
Peel off the masking tape to reveal your finished coasters.
And that’s it!
The surface doesn’t need to be sealed. The glossy acrylic and nail polish will stand up to gentle use without sticking to the bottom of your glass, and the exposed cork will work to absorb the condensation.
All that’s left to do is pop a bottle of bubbly or shake up your favorite cocktail to test them out! 🥂 Cheers, my dears!
