What a sad era to lose Joann’s. I wasn’t aware of the chain store until recently. My own local sewing store linked to a map that Joann’s made of all the local craft and sewing stores - it still pales in comparison. Then I saw a Substack article written by a man who went in with his wife recently. He kinda waited by the front but then realized it’s not really the job or the store people are losing, it’s the community. He made a good point that it was one of the few public spaces where people can go to get reprieve from the heat or cold, and find someone to chat with. Very sad indeed to lose that.
Thank you for the birthday wishes, Amanda! And wow - that map sounds amazing. We have a local fabric store here (mostly for quilting cottons, which aren't really my thing) but I'll have to branch out to neighboring towns to see what other small, local shops could fill in the gaps.
And yes, it's totally about the community. Here's hoping we can find some new spaces to venture into together!
